European Network for Payments launched to connect 130 million users
Five major digital payment platforms have announced the creation of the European Network for Payments (ENP), a new entity headquartered in Madrid designed to facilitate cross-border interoperability. The group includes Spain’s Bizum, Italy’s Bancomat, the European EPI (responsible for Wero), Portugal’s SIBS-MB WAY, and the Nordic platform Vipps MobilePay. The five companies will serve as equal shareholders, managing the technical and operational infrastructure required to connect their systems.
The initiative aims to allow users to send money and make payments across different European countries using their existing applications, without the need to switch platforms. Collectively, the participating services represent approximately 130 million users across 13 countries, covering over 70% of the population in the European Union and Norway. The project is intended to strengthen European technological and financial autonomy by reducing reliance on external providers.
In related developments within the Spanish market, the Bizum ecosystem continues to expand its integration. The marketplace Wallapop has incorporated Bizum as a payment method for both in-person and shipped transactions, maintaining its internal buyer protection protocols. Additionally, the rollout of Bizum Pay, a digital wallet service, is underway with support from several major banks including BBVA and CaixaBank, though consumer reports suggest widespread merchant adoption of the new wallet system is still developing.
