European officials explore new cooperation models for UK and Canada
European officials are discussing potential new frameworks for deepening ties with non-member states. Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee, suggested a “Switzerland plus” arrangement could allow the United Kingdom to achieve closer cooperation with the EU without full membership. This exploratory model could involve economic agreements and political cooperation in sectors such as trade, security, digital policy, transport, and education.
Separately, discussions are underway regarding a potential “associate member” status for Canada. Following a visit to Strasbourg by Canadian leader Mark Carney, European Parliament members have debated creating new statuses to strengthen strategic autonomy in areas like artificial intelligence, defense, and critical minerals. Spanish MEP Javier Moreno Sanchez advocated for creative solutions to foster these ties, noting the geopolitical necessity of such alliances.
