European onion markets face volatility due to heat and drought

Heat and drought have significantly impacted the European onion market, altering harvest timing, yields, and product availability. In the Netherlands, limited availability and strong July demand led to weekly price increases, with medium-sized onions reaching approximately €0.25-€0.26 per kilogram.

In Spain, the harvest of storage onions began up to 15 days earlier than usual due to hot and dry summer conditions. While the cultivated area remained stable at 24,000 hectares, yields are expected to be lower because thermal stress and a shorter growing period limited bulb development. Drought has also increased damage from thrips.

In Italy, the harvest is nearing completion with generally stable yields, though the Emilia-Romagna region recorded lower yields and losses due to wildfires. Prices in Italy remain low, primarily due to limited consumer demand. Meanwhile, the first winter onions have already been harvested in Germany, showing good quality.
