European organizations propose post-growth urban models

Six European civil society organizations, including the Transnational Institute and the Commons Network, have released the ‘Cities Beyond Growth’ manual. This pedagogical guide proposes a transition toward resilient, post-growth urban economies to address the global climate and ecological crisis.

Based on consultations with 1,700 citizens across 100 countries, the study argues that economic models oriented toward continuous growth are no longer ecologically, socially, or politically sustainable. The project advocates for a radical shift in how cities approach economy, social welfare, and democratic participation, emphasizing the need for inclusive transitions led by local governments and communities.
