European Parliament adopts new migrant return regime hailed by Italy's Meloni

The European Parliament has approved a new EU regulation that streamlines the return of illegal third‑country migrants. The law creates fast‑track deportations, introduces detention centres outside the continent and sets up a voluntary return programme with fees payable after departure. The measure, dubbed the “European ICE” by analysts, reflects proposals championed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who praised it as a historic step to protect borders and combat people‑smuggling. Implementation is scheduled for 2026‑2028 under detailed national guidelines.

Meloni, speaking at a G7‑related event in Evian, said the decision validates Italy’s migration strategy and will significantly reduce irregular arrivals on Italian coasts. The regulation received 147 votes in favour, 93 against and three abstentions in the parliamentary vote.
