European Parliament adopts resolution on countering Islamist influence
The European Parliament has adopted a resolution aimed at countering Islamist influence and the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood network within the European Union. The resolution passed with 381 votes in favor, 167 against, and 15 abstentions.
Proposed by the European People's Party (EPP), the largest group in the Parliament, the document seeks to distinguish between Islam as a religion and what it defines as ‘political Islamism’. The resolution describes ‘Islamist entryism’ as a political strategy involving institutional penetration and ideological legitimization.
While the two-page document is not legally binding for EU member states, it marks a significant shift in how the EU addresses the role of Islam and Muslim communities within Europe. The measure received support from the EPP, Patriots for Europe, Europe of Sovereign Nations, and the European Conservatives and Reformists, while receiving opposition from Socialists, the Left, and the Greens.
