European Parliament adopts stricter migration rules, expanding deportation powers

On 17 June 2026, the European Parliament voted 418‑218 to adopt tighter migration legislation. The new rules grant authorities in EU member states broader powers to detain illegal migrants and permit the creation of deportation centres outside the Union. The measures are intended to strengthen the bloc’s ability to manage irregular migration and streamline removal procedures.
