European Parliament approves AGILE defense innovation program

The European Parliament has approved the creation of the AGILE (Agile and Rapid Defense Innovation) program, a new initiative valued at 115 million euros. The program is designed to provide rapid and targeted financial support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including startups and scale-ups, that are developing emerging and disruptive defense technologies.

A key feature of AGILE is the acceleration of the grant allocation process, which is expected to be reduced to four months. The program also aims to bridge the gap between development and operational deployment by offering support for the testing and certification of new technologies. Additionally, it will facilitate connections between SMEs and major defense contractors through specialized networking activities.

Member states will have the opportunity to help define technological challenges to ensure that developed products meet specific security needs. The program also includes provisions for adapting civilian technologies for military use. Following formal approval by the Council, the program is expected to launch at the beginning of 2027.
