European Parliament calls for increased resources to fight drug trafficking

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling for increased resources and international cooperation to combat rising drug trafficking and organized crime violence within Europe. The resolution, passed with 601 votes in favor, seeks to recognize police and customs officers working on the front lines of drug enforcement as a ‘high-risk’ profession.

To address the evolving tactics of criminal networks—which include the use of go-fast boats, semi-submersibles, and large shipping containers—the Parliament is advocating for enhanced funding, better equipment, and improved training for maritime personnel. The text emphasizes the need for stronger real-time intelligence sharing between customs, police, and judicial authorities, specifically calling on agencies such as Europol, Eurojust, Frontex, and the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre (Narcotics) to reinforce joint operations.

Furthermore, the resolution supports a new EU sanctions regime targeting trafficking networks through asset freezes and travel bans. It also highlights the necessity of international collaboration with Latin America, the Caribbean, and West Africa to disrupt transit routes, noting that drug supply remains high despite significant seizures.
