European Parliament calls for measures against Islamist entryism
The European Parliament has passed a resolution calling for increased vigilance against Islamist entryism across Europe. The measure, which received 381 votes in favor and 167 against, aims to protect democratic institutions, the rule of law, and social cohesion from strategies intended to weaken European values from within.
Members of Parliament emphasized the need for a European methodology to identify entryism, focusing on indicators such as opaque financing, institutional ambiguity, and the blurring of lines between religion and politics. The resolution also expressed support for national measures banning full-face veils to promote public safety and social cohesion.
During discussions, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner highlighted the necessity of a strategy to combat the influence of networks like the Muslim Brotherhood. He stressed the importance of preventing radicalization, particularly online, and improving the monitoring of terrorist financing, including through cryptocurrencies. While debating the resolution, political factions clashed, with some calling for the Muslim Brotherhood to be listed as a terrorist organization and others warning against equating all Muslims with extremist groups.
