European Parliament CBAM vote draws criticism from industry and farmers

The European Parliament has approved a new regulation regarding the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from various industrial and agricultural sectors.

Coldiretti has denounced the vote as a “betrayal” of farmers and families, specifically citing the removal of a safeguard clause. This clause would have allowed for the suspension of the measure during severe market disruptions. The organization warns that without this protection, the regulation could cause significant volatility in fertilizer markets, leading to increased food costs and financial strain on households.

Similarly, Federlegnoarredo expressed concern that the decision will impose new costs and burdens on the wood-furniture supply chain. Paolo Fantoni, president of Assopannelli, highlighted that the elimination of Article 27a removes essential flexibility needed during exceptional circumstances. He noted that rising gas prices are already driving up the cost of urea—a key component in manufacturing—and that the inclusion of urea under CBAM risks further compromising the competitiveness of European businesses.
