Zambia disputes European Parliament resolution over post-election repression
The European Parliament has passed a resolution condemning political repression in Zambia following the August 2026 elections. The resolution specifically denounces the killing of former government minister Mutotwe Kafwaya and calls for independent investigations into allegations of illegal force, arbitrary arrests, and the misuse of national security laws.
Seven international legal organizations, including the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute and the Law Society of England and Wales, have also called for probes. They highlighted the cordoning off of Zambia’s superior courts by security forces on August 24, 2026, which occurred shortly before the deadline for filing presidential election petitions. These groups expressed concerns regarding the independence of the judiciary and the potential restriction of access to justice.
The Zambian government has formally challenged the European Parliament's resolution, labeling it premature. Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe stated that such determinations should be based on verified facts and direct engagement with the sovereign state. While acknowledging the investigation into Mutotwe Kafwaya's death, the government maintained that opposition figures are receiving due process and requested formal partnership dialogues with the European Union.
