European Parliament delegation meets Sri Lankan leaders on GSP+ and reforms

A delegation from the European Parliament met with Sri Lankan parliamentary leaders on September 24, 2026, to discuss constitutional reforms and the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) trade framework.

The discussions focused on Sri Lanka’s continued eligibility for GSP+ status, which provides preferential access to European Union markets for sectors such as apparel and fisheries. This status is contingent upon the implementation of international conventions regarding human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, and good governance.

In addition to trade, the delegation engaged with lawmakers regarding the country’s constitutional amendment process. Discussions covered issues of devolution, executive structure, and the protection of fundamental rights. Sri Lankan officials briefed the delegation on national measures concerning anti-corruption, law and order, reconciliation, and the rights of women and persons with disabilities.
