European Parliament hosts controversial embryo development exhibition
An exhibition titled ‘Just EUman – How a European citizen is born’ has sparked controversy at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Organized by MEP Paolo Inselvini of the ECR group and the Italian association Pro Vita & Famiglia, the display features fourteen panels and video footage depicting human embryonic development from fertilization to birth.
Left-wing and Green MEPs, including Manon Aubry, Terry Reintke, and Iratxe Garcia Perez, have formally requested the removal of the exhibition. They argue that while presented as a scientific look at the beginning of life, the initiative is actually a campaign against abortion rights. They have written to Parliament President Roberta Metsola to ensure institutional spaces are not used to promote campaigns that they claim undermine women's fundamental rights.
Proponents of the exhibit, including Inselvini, argue that the European Union should focus on supporting families and pregnant women rather than financing abortion. The event has also caused political friction within the French right, following the attendance of Marion Maréchal, which drew criticism from Rassemblement National leadership.
