European Parliament Secures Expanded Information Rights Over Commission

On 11 March 2026 the European Parliament and the European Commission adopted a revised framework agreement, the first comprehensive update since 2010. The deal strengthens the Parliament’s information rights and expands its ability to control Commission actions, aiming to boost democratic legitimacy within the EU.

Key provisions require the Commission to treat the Parliament on equal footing with the Council, to inform it early about policy initiatives, and to respond within three months when the Parliament requests a legislative proposal, providing justification for its next steps. The reform was praised by the Europa‑Union Deutschland, whose president Andrea Wechsler and vice‑president Gaby Bischoff highlighted the move toward greater transparency and accountability.
