Black Sea: Merchant vessel Khoryv sinks following suspected drone attack

The merchant vessel Khoryv, flying the flag of the Comoros, sank in the Black Sea following a suspected drone attack near the Romanian port of Constanta. The incident occurred approximately 13 nautical miles from the coast, just outside Romanian territorial waters. The vessel was transporting ferrous material from Turkey toward Sulina, Romania.

The crew consisted of 13 members: 10 Ukrainian nationals and 3 Azerbaijani nationals. Rescue operations conducted by the Romanian Coast Guard and other vessels recovered nine survivors from the water, but one crew member was confirmed dead and three others remain missing. Adverse weather and low visibility hindered aerial rescue efforts.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan attributed the attack to Russian escalation in the war against Ukraine. This incident follows a surge in maritime aggression in the region; reports indicate that over 20 crew members have been killed or gone missing in recent weeks due to drone strikes on commercial shipping near Romania and Bulgaria.

In response, the European Parliament passed a resolution condemning the attacks and calling for increased EU funding and potential naval operations in the Black Sea to protect maritime security. Romania has also sought enhanced surveillance and drone defense capabilities through NATO.
