European Parliament votes to counter Muslim Brotherhood influence
The European Parliament has passed a resolution calling for a coordinated European strategy to counter “Islamist entryism” and the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood. The motion, which passed with 381 votes in favor, 167 against, and 15 abstentions, urges the Council of the European Union to evaluate whether entities and individuals linked to the Muslim Brotherhood meet the legal criteria for designation as terrorist organizations.
Led by French MEP Céline Imart of the European People’s Party, the resolution emphasizes the need to distinguish between Islam as a religion and political Islam as an ideology. It calls for increased scrutiny of European Union funding and financial networks to ensure public money does not support Islamist organizations. Additionally, the text requests that member states pool information regarding the movement’s leadership and structures to facilitate potential legal actions.
The vote highlighted significant political divisions within the Parliament. While conservative and right-wing groups supported the measure, members of the Socialists, Greens, and Left groups largely opposed it or abstained, warning against measures that could unfairly target Muslim communities or infringe upon religious freedoms.
