European Parliament waives immunity for MEP Afroditi Latinopoulou

The European Parliament has approved the waiver of immunity for MEP Afroditi Latinopoulou following a request from Greek judicial authorities. The decision comes amid an investigation into the alleged creation and use of forged documents and subsequent voter fraud.

According to the investigation, which covers the period from 2023 to June 2024, Latinopoulou is accused of violating Greek law during the establishment of her political party, ‘Voice of Reason’. Greek authorities allege that a significant portion of the at least 200 required founding signatures were either fictitious or forged.

Investigators are also examining whether these actions impacted the party's public funding, its subsequent operations, and its participation in the 2023 national elections and the 2024 European elections. The European Parliament noted that the alleged offenses are not related to the exercise of parliamentary duties, which is the standard protection provided under EU protocols.
