European pension reforms: Switzerland adds 13th payment as Austria debates retirement age

Discussions regarding retirement and social security are intensifying in Europe, with different approaches being taken in Austria and Switzerland.

In Switzerland, the Federal Social Insurance Office (BSV) has confirmed that recipients of the Old-Age and Survivors' Insurance (AHV) will receive a 13th pension payment starting in December 2026. This additional payment will equal one-twelfth of the total pensions paid during that calendar year. The measure applies to regular AHV pensions but excludes survivor pensions for widows, widowers, or orphans, as well as disability insurance (IV) pensions.

In Austria, proposals to increase the retirement age to 67 have met with significant public opposition. Critics, including members of labor unions and the Chamber of Labour, argue that such a policy fails to account for the physical demands of different professions. Concerns have been raised that a uniform increase would disproportionately affect manual laborers, such as construction workers, who may face decades of physically taxing work before reaching retirement age.
