European People's Party adopts stricter EU border asylum rules

At a small party congress in Vienna, the European People's Party (EVP) adopted a resolution tightening EU migration policy. Delegates voted unanimously for measures that would require migrants arriving from a safe third country to be turned away at the EU’s external borders, bypassing any prior asylum procedure. The resolution also calls for the abolition of the subsidiary‑protection status and grants member states an explicit right to reject migrants who are used as political tools, citing the Belarus‑Poland border as an example.

The text was drafted with heavy input from Germany’s CDU and CSU and was modelled on the approach of interior minister Alexander Dobrindt at Germany’s internal borders. CDU insider Detlef Seif told Bild the decisions have “das Zeug zum Gamechanger,” but argued that further steps are still needed.
