European People's Party holds Taormina summit to set 2024–2029 priorities

The European People's Party (PPE) held its Study Days in Taormina, Sicily, gathering over 140 MEPs and top EU leaders, including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and PPE President Manfred Weber. The event focused on defining the group's political roadmap for the 2024–2029 legislative period, encapsulated in the 'Taormina Document.' Key priorities include boosting European competitiveness, reducing administrative burdens, ensuring energy sovereignty, and strengthening border defense.

During the summit, Ursula von der Leyen advocated for a 'Pact against gold-plating' to prevent member states from adding excessive national bureaucracy to EU directives. She also emphasized the need for strategic energy autonomy and targeted support for sectors affected by global tensions, rather than broad subsidies.

In a regional context, Sicilian agricultural organizations met with EU Commissioner Christophe Hansen to present five urgent priorities: predictable agricultural budgets, protection of farmer incomes under the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), investment in water infrastructure, increased regional involvement in CAP governance, and administrative simplification to aid generational renewal.

Additionally, EU officials noted that European Social Fund Plus (FSE+) resources have successfully improved female employment and early childhood services in Sicily.
