European pilgrimage and cycling routes connect diverse landscapes

Europe offers a vast network of pilgrimage and cycling routes that extend far beyond the traditional Camino de Santiago. These paths connect diverse landscapes, from the Norwegian fjords to the limestone hills of Portugal, offering travelers opportunities for sustainable tourism and connection with nature.

One significant route is the St. Olav Way in Scandinavia. Centered on the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway, this pilgrimage commemorates King Olav Haraldsson. The network includes various paths across Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, totaling approximately 3,000 kilometers.

For cyclists, the EuroVelo initiative provides a massive network of over 90,000 kilometers across 38 countries. A notable route, EuroVelo 3 (the Pilgrim Route), spans 5,650 kilometers and passes through seven countries. This route connects Trondheim to Santiago de Compostela, traversing landscapes such as the Loire Valley and Lower Saxony, and includes 20 UNESCO World Heritage sites.
