European pilots test EV and electric motorcycle bidirectional charging for home power

In the Netherlands, industry analysts note that electric motorcycles could soon provide vehicle‑to‑home (V2H) and vehicle‑to‑grid (V2G) services through bidirectional charging (V2X). While battery capacities on two‑wheelers are modest—around 5‑17 kWh—aggregated fleets could act as distributed energy assets, provided manufacturers adopt compatible on‑board chargers and standards such as CCS.

Denmark has launched a pilot in which selected households use Polestar 4 electric cars and Clever’s two‑way DC wallboxes to test V2X functions. The trial will assess whether the vehicles can supply emergency backup power during outages, feed electricity to the grid during peak demand, and offset household consumption. Over‑the‑air updates will enable bidirectional capability on the Polestar 4, illustrating a shift from concept to everyday reality. Both initiatives highlight the growing interest in using parked EV batteries as flexible storage to improve energy security and reduce grid strain.
