European platform W launches public version as EU‑centric alternative to X

The new social‑media service W, based in Sweden, opened its first public version on Wednesday. Marketed as a European alternative to Elon Musk’s X, the platform requires users to verify their identity by scanning a passport or ID card before posting, while still allowing pseudonymous interaction. W stores all data on European servers and emphasizes transparency, privacy and the fight against disinformation.

EU officials have begun using the service; European Council President António Costa posted his first message on the platform, and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has also signed up. The rollout follows a broader EU push for digital and AI sovereignty, with other European‑origin networks such as Bulle, Eurosky, Monnett and eYou also seeking to reduce reliance on U.S. tech giants.
