European Powers Warn Russia Over South Ossetia Annexation Threat
The United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy issued a joint statement on the 18th anniversary of the 2008 Russia‑Georgia war, warning that recent Russian actions could lead to a formal annexation of South Ossetia. The statement condemned Moscow’s continued military presence in the Georgian‑claimed region and said the May 9 agreement between Russia and the de‑facto authorities of South Ossetia to deepen alliance and cooperation violated Georgia’s sovereignty and the 2008 cease‑fire accord.
The declaration also criticised the appointment of Marat Kambolov, a Russian federal administrator with close ties to President Vladimir Putin, as the new “president” of South Ossetia. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas echoed the concerns, noting that Russia’s integration of South Ossetia and Abkhazia threatens regional security. Only Russia, Nicaragua, Syria and Venezuela still recognise the breakaway regions as independent, while the Republic of Nauru revoked its recognition in July 2026.
