European Public Prosecutor's Office investigates EPP over fund misuse

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) is investigating the European People's Party (EPP) regarding the suspected misuse of funds involving contracts with two Greek consultants. The investigation follows reports from Politico, Die Zeit, Follow the Money, and Inside Story.

The probe concerns more than 500,000 euros paid to consultants for communication work ahead of the 2024 European Parliament elections. While the European Parliament approved initial payments of 110,000 euros, it refused to reimburse the full amount, labeling the costs excessive. Consequently, the EPP had to cover approximately 350,000 euros of the remaining costs.

Former EPP employees have alleged that the compensation was disproportionate to the work performed, though the consultants involved have disputed these claims and stated they returned a portion of the money. The EPPO has neither confirmed nor denied the investigation, stating it cannot comment on cases that might jeopardize ongoing proceedings. An EPP spokesperson noted the party has not been officially notified but expressed readiness to cooperate and maintain transparency.
