European Public Prosecutor's Office investigates EU fund misuse in Greece
The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) is advancing two major investigations involving the misuse of EU funds in Greece.
The first case involves the mismanagement of agricultural subsidies through OPEKEPE. A substantial case file has been prepared involving 22 individuals, including former high-ranking OPEKEPE officials and four sitting New Democracy MPs. The MPs—Kostas Skrekas, Christos Boukoros, and Maximos Senetakis—face allegations of misconduct in office and illegal management of community funds. Additionally, Katerina Papakosta faces charges including misconduct in office, aiding in false statements, and attempted computer fraud.
The second investigation concerns a massive VAT carousel fraud scheme estimated at 46.9 million euros. This network of companies allegedly defrauded both the Greek state and the European Union. Following raids in Attica and Kastoria, the EPPO has carried out seizures of cash, luxury vehicles, real estate, and cryptocurrencies.
