European pubs and bars drive significant tourism trends
Research from Heineken indicates that Europe’s pubs, bars, cafés, and tavernas are significant drivers of tourism, influencing destination choices, neighborhood exploration, and trip duration.
According to the study, 35% of surveyed travelers visited specific areas because of a local bar, and 20% extended their trips due to these venues. The research highlights that these spaces allow tourists to experience local life firsthand, with 73% of respondents agreeing that socializing in such venues helps them understand a destination better.
Economically, Europe’s tourism sector contributes an estimated €828 billion annually. The study notes that tourism-attributable spending on Heineken’s beer portfolio accounts for nearly €2.5 billion per year, representing 7% of the company’s total supported GDP contribution. Beyond economics, the venues serve a social function, with 74% of tourists noting they provide opportunities for meaningful face-to-face connection.
