European rail travel expands as cross-border tourism grows

European rail travel is experiencing a significant rise in popularity, particularly for cross-border journeys. Since 2019, the number of international travelers choosing rail over air travel has increased by approximately 33%. Currently, more than 300 daily long-distance international trains connect over 200 European cities across more than 14 countries, serving roughly 70,000 passengers daily.

This growth is driven by environmental concerns regarding carbon footprints, geopolitical risks, and a preference for scenic, relaxed travel. As an alternative to river cruises, which have faced challenges due to low water levels on major waterways, rail journeys are being promoted to explore regions along the Rhine and Danube. Companies like Railbookers are offering itineraries that connect major cities such as Prague, Budapest, Munich, and Amsterdam, allowing travelers to experience river scenery and historic destinations by land.
