European railways expand high-speed fleets to meet rising demand
Major European railway operators are expanding their high-speed fleets to meet rising demand for international rail travel.
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has announced plans to purchase 21 new high-speed trains rather than leasing them, with options for an additional 20 units. This expansion aims to bolster international services, with potential future connections extending as far as London. The decision follows a surge in demand, with over six million passengers using SBB international trains in the first half of 2026.
In Austria, Siemens Mobility has unveiled the new ÖBB Railjet M at InnoTrans 2026. Designed for inner-Alpine long-distance traffic, the 106-meter-long electric multiple unit is based on the Mireo platform and can reach speeds of 160 km/h. ÖBB has ordered 100 Mireo-based electric units, including 31 Railjet M sets, which are scheduled to enter service in 2028. The new trains feature advanced diagnostics, ETCS signaling, and specialized capacity for bicycles and ski equipment.
