European regions propose new framework for DOP and IGP product protection
European regions are proposing a new strategic framework to enhance the economic value of Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) and Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) products. The Mantova Declaration, to be presented on October 15 during the AREPO general assembly hosted by the Lombardy Region, aims to integrate these quality certifications into the core of European Union economic and territorial policies.
The declaration outlines six priorities for the European Commission’s 2027 Action Plan on Geographical Indications. The goal is to transform legal protection into tangible economic growth, supporting exports, combating fraud, and fostering innovation and generational renewal in rural areas.
In a related effort to revitalize Italian territories, the Mercato Italiano dei Borghi (MIB) project has been introduced to transform historic villages into engines of sustainable development. A collaboration between Borsa Merci Telematica Italiana, ‘I Borghi più belli d’Italia’, and Slow Food Italia, the initiative seeks to use local agri-food excellence to combat rural depopulation and preserve biodiversity and cultural heritage.
