European regulations target fast fashion and home decor sustainability

New regulatory frameworks in Europe are significantly altering the home decor and fashion industries by prioritizing sustainability and durability over rapid consumption.

In the home sector, the European Union’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which entered into force in 2024, mandates requirements for durability, repairability, and recyclability. Furniture and mattresses have been identified as priority product groups for the 2025–2030 period. By 2028–2030, furniture sold within the EU will require a Digital Product Passport (DPP) to certify its environmental profile.

In the fashion industry, Law No. 2026-602 introduces environmental surcharges on textile items from ultra-fast fashion brands, effective September 1, 2026. These penalties will scale through 2030. Additionally, starting January 1, 2027, affected brands will be prohibited from using paid influencer collaborations and advertising, shifting the focus toward repair, reuse, and sobriety. These combined regulations aim to discourage compulsive purchasing and promote long-lasting, high-quality materials.
