European regulators warn of sophisticated clone firm identity theft
European financial regulators are warning of a sophisticated wave of investment fraud involving ‘clone firms.’ In these schemes, criminals impersonate legitimate, regulated banks, funds, and asset managers by adopting their names, licenses, and professional identities to deceive investors.
Luxembourg has emerged as a focal point for this type of identity theft. The Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) issued multiple warnings regarding the misuse of the identity of Quintet Private Bank (Europe) S.A. Fraudsters have been using fraudulent domains and email addresses designed to appear as official communications from the bank, even falsely claiming to represent branches in Sweden and France.
