European reports examine religious abuse and cult history
Recent cultural reports highlight investigations into religious abuse and cult dynamics in Europe. In France, Jesuit theologian and professor Patrick C. Goujon discusses the courage required to break silence regarding sexual violence he experienced as a child within his parish.
In Switzerland, a new documentary titled ‘Le Faiseur d’anges’ explores the history of the Methernitha religious community. Founded in the 1950s by Paul Baumann in the Bernese Oberland, the group operated as a closed community with a complex hierarchy. The documentary uses testimonies to expose how the sect employed manipulation and lies, resulting in widespread abuse, particularly against women.
