European researchers study ethics of genetic modification for nature restoration

A European research project is investigating the ethical implications and regulatory frameworks required for modifying the DNA of plants and animals to combat climate change and restore ecosystems. Led by researcher Karen Filbee-Dexter from the Institute of Marine Research in Norway, the initiative seeks to determine if the environmental benefits of synthetic biology justify the unpredictable risks of releasing genetically altered organisms into the wild.

The study aims to establish ethical principles to guide future actions, addressing whether human intervention is justified to repair damage caused by previous human activity. This work is part of a broader European effort that also examines the ethical limits of human embryo manipulation and the potential for algorithmic DNA design.
