European resilience requires massive investment in energy and security
Europe faces a significant investment requirement to bolster resilience against geopolitical tensions, the energy transition, and threats to critical infrastructure. According to Hannes Cizek, CEO of Raiffeisen Capital Management, and the European Investment Bank, the continent requires approximately 800 billion euros in additional annual investment. Between 70 and 80 percent of this funding must originate from private sources, potentially tapping into the 35 trillion euros in household savings held by Europeans.
Investment needs extend beyond military hardware to include secure telecommunications, power supply, critical raw materials, rail, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure. While the Swiss Federal Electricity Commission assessed on October 13, 2026, that the electricity supply is guaranteed and the risk of a physical shortage is low, businesses must still navigate price volatility, gas storage levels, and weather-dependent water reserves.
Experts suggest that the necessity of rebuilding European security could become a long-term investment theme, as increased capital market activity could fund essential technological and infrastructural advancements.
