European Robins require specific winter feeding to survive
During periods of prolonged cold, frost, or snow, the European robin (Erithacus rubecula) struggles to find its natural prey of invertebrates in the ground or leaf litter. To assist these birds, especially young ones, experts recommend providing energy-rich supplements.
The Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO) suggests using unsalted and unroasted black sunflower seeds, which are high in lipids, as a primary food source. Other suitable supplements include unsalted and unroasted peanuts, walnuts, crushed corn, and simple seasonal fruits. It is critical to avoid bread, salt, or processed foods, as these can be harmful to the birds.
