European Seniors’ Union advocates for UN Convention on rights of older persons
At international sessions organized by the European Seniors’ Union (ESU) in Nicosia, Cyprus, Carmen Quintanilla, Vice President of the ESU, has called for the establishment of a United Nations Convention on the Human Rights of Older Persons. The organization aims to provide global legal protection to address demographic and social challenges facing the elderly.
The forum also addressed the global public health crisis of unwanted loneliness. During a roundtable discussion, experts examined how social isolation negatively impacts physical and mental health and accelerates dependency.
In observance of the International Day of Older Persons on October 1, advocates emphasize the need for active aging, improved care services, accessible housing, and the dismantling of age-related stereotypes to ensure dignity and autonomy for the elderly population.
