UK homebuilders rally as European markets face oil and bond pressures

European equity markets experienced mixed performance as a significant rally in British housebuilders was countered by rising oil prices and elevated bond yields. The pan-European STOXX 600 saw modest gains, while the FTSE 100 remained relatively stable.

UK homebuilder stocks, including Persimmon, Barratt Redrow, Taylor Wimpey, and Vistry, surged between 10% and 15%. This rally followed a government announcement that it would confirm a new equity loan programme for first-time buyers in the upcoming budget. The policy aims to boost home ownership by reducing required deposits from 5% to 2.5%.

Market gains were tempered by a rise in Brent crude prices, driven by geopolitical tensions following the rejection of an Iranian proposal regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, bond yields remained high, with Germany’s 10-year government bond yield reaching its highest level since June 2009.
