European Space Agency awards contracts to German rocket startups
The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded significant contracts to German rocket startups Isar Aerospace and Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) under its European Launcher Challenge initiative. The program aims to bolster Europe's independent access to space and reduce reliance on dominant global providers like SpaceX.
Isar Aerospace secured approximately 200 million euros to fund the development of future launch vehicles, expand testing and launch infrastructure, and support upcoming missions. The company reported a launch manifest extending through 2028.
Rocket Factory Augsburg has also advanced to the second procurement phase of the program. Its contract, scheduled to run through mid-2029, focuses on the development of the RFA ONE Block 2 launch vehicle, the expansion of ground infrastructure, and preparations for scalable serial production. OHB SE serves as a strategic investor in RFA.
