European Space Agency considers accelerating rocket launches

The European Space Agency (ESA) is evaluating an increase in the launch frequency of its Ariane 6 and Vega-C rockets to address a projected surge in satellite deployment demand. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher noted that current capacity may not meet forecasted needs, which are expected to peak around 2030. This demand is driven by internal European missions and significant commercial interest, including 18 commissioned launches from Amazon.

To ensure space sovereignty, the ESA is also exploring the feasibility of launching human crews on European rockets rather than relying on United States vehicles. Such an initiative could potentially increase the agency's budget by approximately 10%.

In the private sector, Spanish company PLD Space is positioning itself as a key player in Europe's efforts to achieve more competitive and reactive launch capabilities. Having successfully completed Europe's first fully private suborbital flight with its Miura-1 rocket in October 2023, the company utilizes a vertical integration strategy to manage everything from engineering to launch operations.
