European Standards of Care updated for pediatric oncology
New European Standards of Care for Children and Adolescents with Cancer have been released to reduce disparities in pediatric oncology across Europe. Developed by the European Society for Paediatric Oncology Europe (SIOPE) and Childhood Cancer International-Europe (CCI-E), the updated guidelines aim to ensure children receive the same level of care regardless of their country of residence.
The 130-page document covers the entire oncological journey, including diagnosis, treatment, supportive care, rehabilitation, palliative care, and the transition from pediatric to adult care. It also addresses cross-border collaboration.
The standards are built upon seven pillars: multidisciplinary team organization, equitable access to innovative treatments and drugs, symptom and pain management, psychosocial support and rehabilitation, integrated palliative care, long-term follow-up, and the active involvement of patients and parent associations. In Italy, the translation was managed by FIAGOP under the supervision of AIEOP to facilitate distribution to national oncology facilities.
