Stoxx 600 falls as European markets face broad sell-off

European stock markets experienced a broad sell-off on Friday, September 18, 2026, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 index falling 1.1%. This decline wiped out recent gains and marked a weekly loss of 0.6% for the index.

Major regional indices also closed lower, including Germany’s DAX, which fell 1.6%, London’s FTSE 100, down 1.5%, and France’s CAC 40, which dropped 1.49%. The downturn was driven by several sector-specific and macroeconomic factors.

The automobile and parts sector saw a significant 3.4% decline, led by Volkswagen, which fell 5.6% following a slashed outlook due to one-off items related to its Porsche stake, job cut provisions, and a weak Chinese market. Porsche shares also fell 4.9%.

Telecommunications stocks dropped 3.3%, with Airtel Africa falling 11.3% amid reports regarding its unit Airtel Money downsizing its London IPO. Additionally, the food and beverage sector lost 1.9%, with Nestle declining 2.6% after Russia seized its local assets. Energy shares fell 0.7% as oil prices retreated.
