Brent oil price surge drives European market swings

Brent crude rose about 8 % to roughly $90.9 per barrel after renewed U.S.–Iran airstrikes, reigniting Middle‑East tensions. The jump lifted energy stocks – BP gained 3.4 % and Shell 2.8 % in London, while Eni rose 7 % in Milan – but weighed on broader European equities.

The EuroStoxx 50 slipped about 0.65 % to 6,248.84 points and the pan‑European Stoxx 600 fell 0.3 %. Luxury shares split sharply: Kering surged nearly 17 % after a strong Gucci sales outlook, whereas Hermes tumbled roughly 11 % following modest Chinese demand. Technology stocks continued to decline, with a 0.4 % drop in the sector.

Investors also awaited the U.S. Federal Reserve’s rate decision, widely expected to leave policy unchanged. The mixed earnings season and the oil‑price shock together created heightened volatility across French, German, Swiss and broader European markets.
