European Study Shows Single Night of Bedtime Phone Use Doesn't Reduce Sleep Duration
A collaborative study by the University of Antwerp and Maastricht University analysed objective smartphone usage data and wearable‑device sleep metrics. The researchers found that, for a single night, increased screen time before bed delayed sleep onset but did not significantly shorten total sleep time or lower sleep quality. Over longer periods, habitual extensive phone use in bed was associated with later bedtimes, shorter sleep duration and poorer sleep quality.
In Taiwan, psychiatrist Dr Yang Tsung‑Tsai highlighted broader health concerns of nighttime phone habits, noting that blue‑light emission suppresses melatonin production and that rapid‑short‑video formats trigger dopamine spikes that can foster anxiety, depression and other mental‑health issues, especially among young women. He urged strategies for co‑existing with smartphones rather than becoming dependent on them.
