European Summer Flight Delays Hit Portugal and Israel Airports

Research by passenger‑rights firm AirHelp found that Portugal recorded the highest average flight delays in Europe during the first half of the year, with travelers collectively losing more than seven million hours. The busiest Portuguese airports – Lisbon, Porto and Faro – saw especially severe disruption as a surge in tourism met staffing shortages, air‑space congestion and occasional weather‑related issues.

During the same summer travel rush, Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport experienced widespread delays and cancellations between 20 July and 27 July, with only 31 % of flights departing on time. Contributing factors included the presence of U.S. military refuelling aircraft occupying parking stands, heavy seasonal demand, and radar and air‑traffic‑control disruptions in Greek airspace that rippled across the Mediterranean. Both incidents illustrate the broader operational challenges facing European and neighboring air travel networks despite post‑pandemic recovery.
