European sunflower markets face price volatility amid varying regional yields

The European sunflower market is facing significant price disparities ahead of the harvest. While Romania and Bulgaria anticipate record yields that may stabilize prices, other regions face different outlooks. Hungary is experiencing lower domestic supply and weaker yields, leading to a higher need for imports, with August averages around 500 euros per ton.

In Ukraine, sunflower prices have seen a sharp decline, dropping from approximately 580 to 380 euros per ton in just two weeks. This volatility is influenced by export difficulties via the Black Sea and the shifting role of Ukrainian produce in the European market. In Serbia, the market remains relatively stable, with advance prices for the current crop at approximately 341 euros per ton.

In Croatia, extreme heat and drought are severely impacting corn production, with farmers in Slavonia predicting yield reductions between 40 and 70 percent. While sunflower crops are proving more resilient to climate change due to deep root systems, the overall agricultural landscape is being reshaped by shifting weather patterns and temperature extremes.
