French supermarkets hit by massive refrigeration cyberattack

A large-scale cyberattack targeting the refrigeration systems of hundreds of French supermarkets has caused significant food spoilage and economic damage. Hackers remotely accessed temperature controllers, specifically targeting software from Danfoss and other manufacturers like Copeland and Dixell. In many instances, attackers activated defrost modes, causing temperatures to rise as high as 50°C for several hours.

Major retail chains including Intermarché, Carrefour, Coopérative U, and Monoprix were affected. Estimates suggest that approximately 700 of France's 10,000 supermarkets were impacted, with some reports indicating losses could reach tens of millions of euros. The disruption led to the mass disposal of fresh and frozen goods and, in some locations, triggered fires.

The French national cybersecurity agency, ANSSI, and the Paris prosecutor's office have launched investigations. Authorities warned that the vulnerability stems from outdated, end-of-life equipment that remains connected to the internet without current security patches. While no group has claimed responsibility, the incident has raised alarms across Europe regarding the security of the digital food supply chain.
