European Swimming Pools See Attendance Surge Amid Price Hikes and Heat Wave

In Austria, outdoor swimming pools are experiencing strong visitor numbers despite a rise in entry fees. The largest pool in Fürstenfeld raised its daily price from €8.50 to €10, yet over 10,000 guests still attend on peak days. Graz’s municipal pools have already welcomed about 270,000 swimmers this season, and a forecast heat wave could bring temperatures up to 36 °C across Styria.

In Germany, pool entry prices have risen faster than overall inflation, with an average increase of 3.6 % for free‑ and indoor pools. Cost pressures from labour, energy, chemicals and maintenance are driving the hikes, and some Schleswig‑Holstein facilities report tariff jumps of up to 150 %. Left Party co‑chair Luigi Pantisano criticised the trend, warning that swimming should remain affordable for all. The spike in pool usage coincides with extreme heat, which has already caused more than 5,120 heat‑related deaths in Germany by the end of June, raising health concerns as temperatures are expected to exceed 40 °C later in the summer.
