European telecoms and Italy's University of Turin push quantum‑safe networking

Telecom operators across Europe are laying the technical groundwork for quantum‑safe networks. According to an Analysys Mason briefing, the industry is investing in post‑quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum key distribution (QKD) to protect future infrastructure and enable new services. Development will hinge on regulatory requirements, standard‑setting timelines and the maturity of the whole supply chain.

In Italy, the University of Turin has joined the National Quantum Science and Technology Institute (NQSTI), a national partnership that brings together universities, public research bodies and industry. The move, funded through the EU’s NextGenerationEU programme, aims to link fundamental quantum research with applications such as secure communications and advanced sensing, and to translate laboratory results into industrial solutions.
